PROFILE/DESCRIPTIONThe purpose of this project was to use the pen tool to draw a symbol and then use it as a cookie cutter over an image with a clipping mask. This combination is intended to be a commentary on a contemporary issue that has occurred recently in the news.
GOALSRecently, it has been found that Volkswagen has been cheating on their emissions tests. These falsified results can have an adverse effect on the environment. With this logo and image, I was attempting to display two ideas. When presented with a clipping mask like this one, one of two possibilities exists: either the symbol is seen first, or the image is. If the symbol is seen first, people think of Volkswagen first-- they may acknowledge that things have happened in the background of the company's history, but that won't stop them from thinking of Volkswagen as a motor company. It won't stop people from purchasing VW Beetles. On the flip side, maybe people will see the pollution first, then Volkswagen. This could mean that Volkswagen's credibility is totally gone, an inverse idea to the first one presented. Alternatively, it could show that pollution is a large problem, and that Volkswagen has contributed to that problem, but is not the core source of pollution worldwide. I also tried to make sure that the smokestack could be seen, to assure viewers that yes, that is pollution, and not just a tinted or dirty cloud.
