Dave Palumbo did not know the young men, but he had heard what they had done and he shook his head in what-fools-these-mortals-be disgust. Then he shifted his body in his chair ever so gingerly, for that body is his franchise, his obsession, his work in progress.

Mr. Palumbo is an amateur bodybuilder, perhaps Long Island's biggest in both physique and reputation. He weighs 270 pounds, needs a size 64 blazer to cover his enormous chest, and has biceps that approach the circumference of volleyballs. He is on the cusp of turning professional, which could bring him lucrative endorsements and maybe even put him on the cover of Flex magazine.
